Wayne Lim (b. 2000) is a writer and image-maker from Singapore, based in Boorloo/Perth.

Grounded in an ongoing search for self and home, his practice spans experimental image-making and moving-image work, using them to consider questions of distance, memory, and place. Presently, his interest in walking as a creative methodology has expanded his practice toward interactive media and socially-engaged works that echo the physical, social, and emotional aspects of the migratory experience.

Trained as a visual journalist, his work has been published in Austin’s alt-weekly The Austin Chronicle and Singapore’s daily broadsheet The Straits Times, and awarded at College Photographer of the Year, the world’s largest collegiate photojournalism competition. His documentary films have also screened in competition at the Academy Awards-qualifying Short Shorts Film Festival (Japan), among others.

From searching for missing persons to towing vehicles out of rivers, the volunteer-run Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR) keeps both residents and tourists safe.

This photo essay was shot during a 10-day trip to Iceland as part of an overseas reporting class.

While working on this story, I spent three days in the Icelandic highlands with 15 volunteers from the Keflavik rescue team. They welcomed me into their family, with really good spaghetti for dinner, and plenty of laughter during patrols.

A version of this project was published in the World in Focus section of Singapore’s daily broadsheet, The Straits Times, on 25 September 2024.

Read it here.
